EXTERIOR
General Features and Description:
Designed on a semi-displacement hull, the Beneteau Swift Trawler 44 (built from 2011 to 2020) is one of the most popular fast trawlers in the world, with over 300 units built. She followed the Swift Trawler 42 (built from 2007 to 2010). The key is to build a strong yet not very heavy hull, capable of handling heavy seas (CE certification “Category B,” includes boats operating offshore with winds to 40 knots and significant seas to 13 feet). She can easily cruise at 18 to 20 knots (top speed 25 knots), for around 340 NM of range, or slow it down to 8 to 9 knots for a “slow cruise” speed, giving you about 2NM/Gal, or well over 600 NM of range. She runs on twin 300 HP Volvo Penta with straight shafts and comes standard with bow and stern thrusters.
Key exterior design features include an asymmetrical deck that creates a wide walkway to Starboard, with a lower helm that has a door also to Starboard, and an opening gate to access the dock easily when docking (with still around a foot wide walkway to Port). There is a very large cockpit aft with an overhanging roof, easy access to the foredeck with tall handrails, and a flybridge that houses a mast with davit systems to haul a large tender, a large double settee with table, and the upper helm.

As such, there is an about 15 inches-wide side deck to step out onto and a pocket door directly across to step off the boat and onto the dock. This vessel is designed with an asymmetrical deck, so that it’s best to dock from the starboard side, whether bow or stern in.
